Guide
How to choose a digital marketing agency in Pakistan
The right agency for a Pakistani business is the one that can explain how its work will produce leads or sales for you, reports honestly on what happened, and leaves you in control of your accounts. This guide explains how to choose a digital marketing agency: what to check, what to ask and the warning signs to walk away from.
- What a good agency will show you
- Questions to ask in the first call
- Red flags to avoid
- How fees are usually structured
Step 1
Start with the result you need, not the service
Before you speak to any agency, write down what you need more of: phone calls, WhatsApp enquiries, online orders, walk-in customers, quote requests from abroad. Also note roughly what one new customer is worth to you.
This does two things. It lets you judge whether an agency’s plan leads to that result, and it tells you how much you can afford to pay for a lead. An agency that starts by selling you “10 posts a month” without asking about your customers is selling activity, not results.
Match the channel to the goal
| You need | Usually starts with |
|---|---|
| Local calls and visits | Google Business Profile, local SEO, Google Search ads |
| Online orders | Meta ads, Performance Max, a fast store |
| B2B or export enquiries | SEO, Google Search ads abroad, LinkedIn |
| Awareness for a new brand | Meta, TikTok or YouTube video, with a clear offer |

Step 2
What to check before you hire
Real, checkable work
Ask for live websites, campaigns or clients you can contact. Screenshots of big numbers with no context prove very little.
Who does the work
Find out whether the people on the sales call will run your account, or whether it is passed to a junior team or a freelancer you never meet.
Account ownership
Your Google Ads, Meta Business, Analytics and domain should be in your name, with the agency given access. You should never lose them if you leave.
Reporting
Ask to see a sample report. It should show spend, leads, cost per lead and what will change next, not just likes and impressions.
Step 3
Red flags that should end the conversation
Some promises sound attractive and cause long-term damage. If an agency offers any of the things listed here, walk away.
Also be careful with very low monthly fees for “complete digital marketing”. Good work takes skilled hours. A price that covers only a few hours a month will buy a few hours a month.
Avoid agencies that offer
- Guaranteed number 1 rankings on Google
- Bought followers, likes or reviews
- Thousands of backlinks for a small fee
- Ads run from their account, not yours
- Long contracts with no exit clause
Google’s spam policies specifically target link schemes and fake reviews.
Step 4
Questions to ask in the first call
01
How will this bring me customers?
A clear answer names channels, what will be measured and a realistic timeline. Vague answers about “visibility” and “brand presence” are a warning.
02
What happens in the first 90 days?
You should hear about tracking, audits and setup before big results. Anyone promising instant results from SEO is guessing.
03
How do you charge, and what is not included?
Ask whether ad spend is included or separate, and what counts as extra work.
04
How do I leave if it is not working?
A confident agency offers a reasonable minimum term and a simple exit. It does not need to trap you.
Fees
How agency fees are usually structured in Pakistan
- Fixed monthly retainer: the most common model. You pay a set fee for agreed work each month.
- Percentage of ad spend: common for paid media. It can reward the agency for spending more, so check how budgets are decided.
- Project fee: for one-off work such as a website, audit or campaign setup.
- Performance-based: payment per lead or sale. Rare, and usually only when tracking is solid and both sides agree what counts.
Whatever the model, ad spend should be visible to you in the platform itself. At ScaleUp we charge a fixed monthly management fee in PKR, agreed before work starts, and ad spend is paid directly from your own accounts.

Checklist
How to choose a digital marketing agency: 7 checks before you sign
If you only have ten minutes, use this list. It sums up how to choose a digital marketing agency without being swayed by a polished pitch.
- They asked about your customers and margins before proposing channels.
- They explained what will be measured and how leads are tracked.
- You will own the ad accounts, analytics and domain.
- You know who will run your account day to day.
- You have seen a sample monthly report.
- The contract has a reasonable minimum term and a clear exit.
- They did not promise rankings, followers or instant results.
Any agency working on SEO should also follow Google Search Essentials. Choosing a digital marketing agency that cuts corners there can cost you rankings you already have.

A clear, written process is one of the first things to look for.
FAQ
Choosing an agency: common questions
Should I hire a local agency in my city?
Local knowledge helps, especially for local SEO and area targeting, but most digital marketing is done remotely anyway. Judge an agency on its work, communication and honesty more than its address.
Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency?
Often, yes. A good freelancer can be excellent for one channel. An agency makes more sense when you need several skills together, such as ads, design, website changes and tracking.
How long should I give an agency before judging results?
Around three months for paid campaigns and three to six months for SEO. Knowing this is part of how to choose a digital marketing agency with realistic expectations. You should still see clear activity, tracking and early signals within the first month.
How to choose a digital marketing agency for a small business?
Prioritise honesty, tracking and ownership of accounts over size. A small, focused agency that reports clearly often suits a small business better than a large one.
